In the July issue of Oilfield Technology, Ingrain's Joel Walls and Anyela Morcote, in conjunction with Stanford fellow Jack Dvorkin, examined a new approach to understand in detail the variability of rock mechanical properties applying High Resolution Dual Energy CT Scanning.
A critical need in development of hydrocarbon resources from source rocks is to understand in detail the variability of rock mechanical properties in the geologic zones of interest. There are two main factors required for commercial success of these expensive wells in very tight rocks: The quality of the source rock and success of the hydraulic fracturing.
This article describes how X-ray CT imaging of core samples can be used to understand the vertical variability of rock elastic and mechanical properties in tight rocks, at a resolution not available before.
