Shale Whole Core Services

Digital Rock Physics for Shale Plays: From Whole Core to Pore Space

In shale, we believe you must understand your pore system to understand the behavior of your reservoir. Ingrain’s services enable our clients to find and develop their most productive rocks by providing critical insights into:

  • Lithology, rock facies, and brittleness indicators
  • Whether and how the pores are connected
  • Where the hydrocarbons are and where the water may be
  • The organic matter/porosity threshold
  • Framework mineralology

We’ve developed a multi-scale workflow that begins with the whole core (CoreHD®) and systematically classifies the rock to ensure our work at each sampling scale is representative of the prior volume as we progress through our analysis - from the meter to the centimeter to the nanometer scale and back.

  1. For shales, the nanometer scale tells us about the matrix and pore system and is the target for obtaining rock property data.

  2. We use systematic selection techniques to ensure representative rock samples, including whole core facies analysis, plug CT heterogeneity evaluation, and pore correlation statistics.

  3. Once we are confident in our representative samples, we use DRP to obtain rock property data such as porosity, permeability, TOC, porosity associated with organic matter (HC filled porosity), and conversion ratio.

  4. We select and analyze sufficient number of samples to establish physical and empirical trends (usually 10-15 samples per facies).

CoreHD®: CT Imaging of Whole Core

CoreHD® is Ingrain's breakthrough technology platform for high-definition, dual-energy CT imaging and logging of whole core.
  • Characterize rock types and flow units
  • Quickly optimize the number and location of core plugs for advanced rock properties analysis

ReconHD™: Drilling Cuttings

Ingrain’s ReconHD® offers elemental, mineralogical, and geochemical from drilling cuttings in log format.  These quantitative measurements help discriminate lithology, rock facies, reservoir quality, and depositional sequences, and set the foundation for pore system property determination from ZoneID.

  • Validate target zone

  • Confirm containment

  • Make well to well comparisons

ZoneID™: Pore System Properties from SEM

Identify target zones with ZoneID™: Plug to pore scale evaluation targeted to quickly identify shale rock characteristics from micro-CT, SEM, and mineralogical analysis.

Our ZoneID™ service utilizes both CT and quantitative SEM technologies. This unique offering provides values of porosity and organic matter volume fraction and is also used as a screening tool to ensure selection of representative samples for the subsequent PoreHD™ FIB-SEM analysis. Multiple 2D SEM images are used to obtain porosity and organic matter volume fraction for each ion-milled sample. Both secondary electron (SE) and energy-selective backscatter (ESB) images will be provided for each sample. SE images give maximum resolution of the porosity and ESB images help discriminate between different solid components (minerals and organic matter).

Three-dimensional computation of permeability, porosity, and organic material from computations on FIB-SEM rock volume.

PoreHD™ analysis begins with nanometer-scale FIB-SEM pore and matrix imaging in 3D.  This is followed by segmentation, image processing, and creation of digital rock volume. All deliverable rock properties are derived from analysis and calculations are based on the same digital rock volume, ensuring internal consistency of delivered data.
